South Goa MP Captain Viriato Fernandes on Saturday expressed serious concern over the growing drug menace in the state, warning that drug peddlers are now targeting school students with cheap, candy-like narcotics outside educational institutions.

Addressing the media, Fernandes said the situation was alarming and required immediate intervention, as vulnerable young students were being lured into substance abuse at an early age.

“Drug peddlers are now targeting students outside schools by distributing cheap drug-laced candies. This is a very dangerous trend, as it is aimed at trapping children and pushing them into addiction,” Fernandes said.

He stated that the issue was not limited to isolated incidents but pointed to a wider drug culture that, according to him, has taken root in Goa over time.

Fernandes further said he had raised the issue in Parliament, drawing attention to the seriousness of the situation and the need for stronger enforcement measures.

The MP also criticised the state government, alleging that it had failed to effectively tackle the drug problem despite repeated concerns being raised.

“The government has failed to control the drug menace. Despite clear indications of widespread drug activity, there has been no strong or sustained action to dismantle these networks,” Fernandes said.

In a sharp remark, Fernandes went on to allege possible links between those in power and drug operators, calling for accountability and transparency.

“There is a strong suspicion that some ministers in the cabinet may be in connivance with drug lords, which is allowing this culture to flourish in the state,” he said.

Fernandes urged authorities to act decisively to protect the youth and restore public confidence.
