Murder fallout: Sunni masjid in Margao sealed for 2 days

MARGAO

The Sunni Gulistan masjid at the Gogol Housing Board, which hit the headlines following Friday’s murder, was temporarily sealed by the Margao Sub-divisional Magistrate and deputy Collector, Ganesh Barve on Saturday.

The Masjid will remain closed for the next two days and the authorities will take a review upon the expiry of the two-day period before taking any decision.

A notice ordering the closure of the place of worship was pasted on the Masjid by officials on Saturday morning. The action by the Margao SDM is based on a report submitted by the police authorities, apprehending disturbance to peace and tranquillity in the aftermath of the Friday incident.

In his order issued under section 163 of the BNS Act, SDM Barve said the incident has necessitated timely preventive measures in the interest of maintaining law and order and preventing any escalation of the situation.

“Considering the fact and circumstances of the case, it is considered expedient and necessary in the interest of public safety and public order to temporarily regulate and restrict access to the premises to prevent breach of peace”, he said.

The order directed that the premises of Sunni Gulistan Masjid shall remain closed and secured for a period of two days from the date and time of issuance of the order. It was further ordered that no person shall be permitted to enter in or exit from the premises except with the prior written permission of the officer in-charge of Fatorda police station or any officer duly authorised by him in his behalf.
