The World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development was celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India), Goa State Centre at the International Centre on Friday.
The Chief Guest for the function was Nitin Kantak (executive director at Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd), while two guest speakers, Dr Balaji Ramakrishnan (professor, IIT Bombay) and Er Vaman Gaitonde (ex-MD, Modest Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd, Goa) shared their knowledge on the theme, ‘Build Back Wiser- Engineering the Future’.
Welcoming the gathering, the Chairman, Institution of Engineers (India), Goa State Centre, Er. Gajanan Karkare explained the role of IEI in the development of engineering fraternity in India and Goa in particular.
In his address on sustainability, he emphasised the three pillars of sustainable development, social, economic and environmental, and their importance on building a holistic model of developing engineering and manufacturing industry in India.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Nitin Kantak said engineers are required to take the role of leadership to take up sustainable development.
He highlighted the role of the government of India in combating adverse impact of climate change and having a total control on emissions.
The major breakthroughs of energy through nuclear fission, wonder material stronger than steel but lighter than plastic and the technology to obtain fuel from carbon dioxide which would be helping in sustainable development.
Guest Speaker, Er Vaman Gaitonde explained the goals adopted by the United Nations at UN17. He presented the facets of clean water, sanitisation, affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communication, climate action and what the engineers can do in future for sustainable development.
Dr Balaji Ramakrishnan, presented many case studies undertaken by him and IIT Bombay while giving sustainable solutions to problems faced by worldwide stakeholders.
