PORVORIM
The Porvorim Welfare Foundation (PWF) has voiced strong opposition to the central government’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) for a private jetty at Malim, alleging it is an indirect attempt to push a marina project.
Addressing a news conference at Porvorim, PWF President Vikas Prabhu Dessai stated that a similar marina project at Nauxi-Bambolim was scrapped due to vehement opposition by locals and environmentalists.
“The Penha de Franca panchayat should immediately convene a special gram sabha to discuss the matter and adopt a resolution demanding the scrapping of this project and send it to the State government. If this project comes into existence, it will have a disastrous effect on the environment and the traditional fishing community at Betim and Britona, who will lose their livelihood,” said Prabhu Dessai.
Prabhu Dessai further mentioned that the Mandovi river is already congested and a major area is occupied by casino vessels.
“Porvorim is slowly and gradually turning into a concrete jungle. Residents should be mindful of proposed projects which will spoil the environment and beauty of Porvorim. If the government does not scrap this private Malim jetty, then the PWF will be forced to stage an agitation,” warned Prabhu Dessai.
