Anjuna police have registered a case of online cheating after a youth was allegedly duped of over Rs 2.23 lakh in a cyber fraud linked to an advertisement on the OLX platform.
The offence has been registered at Anjuna police station under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, following the transfer of an FIR from the Cyber Crime Police Station.
According to the complaint lodged by Ryan Correia (25) of Fuldem Vaddo, Nagoa, the incident occurred on January 25. Correia had posted an advertisement to sell a treadmill on the OLX application when he was contacted by an unknown person through a mobile number.
Police said the accused, with dishonest intent, induced the complainant to share an OTP received on his mobile phone under the pretext of completing the transaction. Soon after, an amount of Rs 2,23,998 was fraudulently debited from Correia’s bank account.
The accused is currently unidentified. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Nitesh Shingadi of Anjuna police station.
