Ahead of the upcoming Exposition of the sacred relics of Saint Francis Xavier, next week, the State government on Tuesday threw open one lane of the flyover at Chimbel junction on the Panaji-Ponda bypass via Kadamba Plateau, for public.
The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that the entire project will be completed in another six months. The contract for the Chimbel flyover project was awarded to Nashik-based Sitaram Infra Projects, with an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore.
Addressing the event, Sawant announced that by 2027, the government intends to give major infrastructure boost with Margao bypass, Cuncolim-Canacona bypass and Porvorim flyover.
He said that while Margao bypass would be completed by December, this year, the work on the construction of Cuncolim-Canacona bypass would commence shortly. “The work of Porvorim flyover has already commenced and it will take another one and half year to two years for the project to be complete,” Sawant said.
St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes and CCP Mayor Rohit Monserratte were also present at the inauguration.
Interestingly, within minutes of the road being opened, even before the formal function could begin, an ambulance coming from Old Goa and heading towards Bambolim became the first vehicle to use the flyover.
“These infrastructures not only help in saving costs and time but also life saving,” he said.
The Chimbel junction had turned dangerous following expansion of the bypass road passing through the Kadamba Plateau, starting from Chimbel. The bypass was constructed in 2004 and its expansion took place in 2014. The junction had witnessed several accidents including fatalities.
