Much of last year may have been under lockdown on account of the Covid pandemic, but that did not reduce the number of traffic violations in Mormugao as the Vasco Traffic Cell penalised 42,779 people in 2020 and collected a fine of Rs 50.86 lakh.
According to information, the fines were for various offences which included riding without a helmet, overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, parking in a no-parking zone or a dangerous manner, talking on the mobile while driving, dangerous/wrong overtaking, cutting lanes, driving with bright/improper lights, driving without a licence, carrying passengers in cabins, driving without seatbelts, tinted glasses on vehicles, expired vehicle insurance, not wearing uniforms, vehicles without number plates and crossing during a red light.
Incidentally, the number of violations increased from 42,752 in 2019 to 42,779 in 2020, even though the fines collected from these violations dropped from Rs 56.17 lakh in 2019 to Rs 50.86 lakh in 2020.
According to Vasco Traffic Cell Police Inspector Sudesh Narvekar, action has also been taken against rent-a-cars and rent-a-bikes parked in the city.
Also, four-wheelers parked near Joshi Chowk have been given time till 9 am, and the owners have then been ordered to remove their vehicles if they do not rent them. With PI Narvekar threatening to take action, the place has now been left vacant.
Stating that many accidents have taken place due to negligence, PI Narvekar has appealed to parents to ensure that their children follow all traffic rules while driving vehicles, else they will be liable to strict action.
