Panaji MLA meets CM, wants St Inez crematorium construction work expedited

PANAJI
The Panaji MLA Atanasio Babush Monserrate on Tuesday met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and discussed with him the issue of slow pace of the construction work of crematorium in St Inez.

The tender for the work was floated way back in 2018, but the renovation work of the crematorium is going at a slow pace. The local MLA has said that he is not satisfied with the pace of work and has demanded with the Chief Minister to intervene and expedite the work.

The government has undertaken the renovation of the Hindu crematorium, Muslim kabrastan and burial grounds at the existing site in St Inez with the cost estimated at over Rs 9 crore. The project which was conceptualised nearly 10 years ago, had to pass many hindrances of approval from government and the other stakeholders.

The project was discussed with community members and trustees of Bhatulem, Panaji and Taleigao mosques and St Inez kabrastan.

Earlier though there was CCP’s approval in 2015, opposition from stakeholders prevented the project from taking off. As per consultant the project was supposed to be completed in 18 months, but no big progress has happened in the project work.
