Authorities have rectified a traffic signal issue at the accident-prone Peddem Junction on NH-66.
Shiv Sena (UBT) Goa chief Jitesh Kamat explained how poorly installed traffic signals had caused confusion among motorists.
According to him, after a few mishaps at the junction, signals were hastily put up on both sides of the road. However, the placement led to "double confusion" as commuters found it difficult to interpret the signals correctly.
Kamat said that concerned locals who had witnessed the accident raised the matter and efforts were made to highlight the issue through the media.
The overlapping signals and obstructing advertisement boards, including one linked to a casino, had reduced the visibility of the traffic signals.
“We explained that the same road had two signals, which was not a coincidence but a result of poor planning,” Kamat said, adding that the signal was placed on a traffic circle already covered with boards, further complicating the situation for road users, especially tourists.
Following the media campaign, Kamat praised the prompt action taken by the concerned authorities.
“The signals have now been removed and repositioned properly and the obstructing boards have also been taken down. The visibility is clear, and the confusion has been resolved,” he said.
He thanked the authorities for their swift response and called the outcome a step in the right direction for improving road safety in the area.
The Peddem Junction on the busy NH-66 is known to witness heavy traffic, including tourist vehicles, and is regarded as a sensitive spot for accidents.
