MAPUSA
Part of a family were behind bars after Mapusa police on Thursday arrested the wife of the undertrial involved in a daring escape, taking the number of those arrested in the case to three, even as the JMFC court in Mapusa has remanded the trio to five days in police custody.
The undertrial, Vivek Kumar Gautam, who was incarcerated in the Central jail in an extortion case and his brother, Mohit Kumar Gautam, who was involved in the escape bid was nabbed in a joint effort by the Crime Branch and Mapusa and Pernem Police late Wednesday night.
Police, however, are yet to lay their hands on the third associate who was part of the plan to engineer the escape bid from the district hospital.
Mapusa Police has also recovered the pistol used in the incident that took place near the North Goa District Hospital.
According to a police official involved in the investigation, the undertrial’s wife, Puja Kanwar Raghuwanshi, and his brother left Jaipur (in Rajasthan) two days ago and had switched off their mobiles.
Police sources also informed that the undertrial’s brother was a hard nut to crack and was giving evasive answers to probing questions.
“We have arrested the wife because she is involved in the conspiracy to help her husband to escape. We are investigating the matter to get into the root of the conspiracy,” said Utkrisht Prasoon, Superintendent of Police, North Goa.
It may be recalled the accused undertrial at the Colvale jail escaped from the custody of escort police along with his accomplices by spraying pepper powder and firing a gun shot at the policeman outside the North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa.
Late Wednesday night, the Crime Branch Police along with Mapusa and Pernem Police managed to nab the undertrial and his brother from two different places.
