Police ramp up security amid rising thefts

PANAJI

As burglaries and house thefts have seen a rise in the past few days, Goa Police issued safety guidelines urging residents not to leave valuables at home and to inform neighbours or the nearest police of their absence.

With Ganesh Chaturthi beginning today and preparations that began way ahead, families have been visiting their native places for celebrations depending on the number of days Ganesh idols are kept at their homes. The schools are also closed for 7 to 10 days, prompting an extended vacation.

North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal confirmed that night patrolling has been increased and staff is sensitized over security. “Any suspicious persons should be frisked and questioned, and legal action taken if necessary,” he added.

In South Goa, SP Sunita Sawant urged community cooperation, also adding that police teams are on their toes. “We have asked Sarvajanik Ganesh mandals and the general public not to leave valuables unattended. Families leaving their homes should notify their neighbours or the nearest police station for safety,” she told The Goan, adding that patrolling by Robert, Robot and beat staff has been ramped up.

The police have also circulated emergency helpline numbers including contacts of the beat staff, in case of any incidents or emergencies.
