In a bid to overcome frequent choke-ups and overflow of sewage from manholes, which pose a nuisance and a health hazard to citizens in the commercial capital, the government has launched an ambitious Rs 18 crore HDPE pipe bursting technology project in the Fatorda area of the city.
Work on the project will be taken up at Amritnagar, Vidyanagar, Monte Hill, St Joaquim Chapel Road, Madel, and near the KTC bus stand area, and it is expected to be completed within a year and a half. The contractors are expected to complete 50 metres of work every day to meet the target.
Launching the project at Borda on Friday, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai urged the people to cooperate with the Sewerage Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Ltd and the contractors to complete the work on time. He also mentioned that the PWD has appointed a local contractor to restore the roads to their original condition after the digging work.
He said the project aims at rehabilitating the sewers using trenchless technology by employing the inline replacement of existing sewers with the HDPE pipe bursting method. “The project will cost the government Rs 18 crore. I have not taken a single rupee from the contractors. All that I have insisted is that the contractors should execute good quality work and ensure good quality restoration of the damaged roads,” he said.
He added, “If the BJP government has done something good, we welcome the work. But, it is the duty of the opposition to point out the wrongs. But that does not mean that the government does bad things always.”
Saying that cleanliness has now become the fundamental right of every citizen, Sardesai stated that hundreds of crores spent on sewerage will go down the drain if the chambers overflow and pose a health hazard to the population.
