Push for Romi, Forum to draft Bill

The Global Konknni Forum on Tuesday resolved to draft a Bill to demand equal status for Roman Script along with Devnagari by amending the Official Language Act 1987 and a Bill/Ordinance to introduce Konkani in Roman Script in Schools from Std 1-10 in a phased manner.

The Forum has further resolved to intensify the ongoing movement in support of Konkani in Roman script. People from each constituency will take an appointment with their respective MLAs, to respectfully ask them a specific question “Kodel Zai vo Romi Zai”. They will hand over to the MLAs the draft of the two Bills prepared by GKF, which the MLAs have to propose and get it passed in the Assembly session in December.

At its executive committee meeting held at the Holy Spirit Hall on Tuesday to review the progress of the Roman script movement of last month and to chalk out activities for the months to come, GKF president Kennedy Afonso said the Forum has successfully revived the issue of granting equal status to Roman Script, by taking it before the people, and motivating them to pass resolutions in their respective village gram Sabhas. “Today more than 50 Gram Sabhas have passed the resolutions, and GKF thanks all Gram Sabhas members and Sarpanchas for their cooperation and support, and request other villages to follow the example”, he said.

Afonso said the GKF has resolved to intensify the movement to further by holding village Corner meetings, across pan Goa. He has requested all Romi Konknni Script lovers to come forward to organise such corner meetings in their village under the banner of Global Konkani Forum.

“Currently GKF is in the process of forming village groups of Global Konknni Forum in each village, and requests individuals to join Global Konknni Forum, to help take this movement to its logical conclusion”, he added.

Saying the Global Konknni Forum has also resolved to prepare two Bills which will be given to the Chief Minister and all MLAs, he said the first Bill will demand equal status for Roman Script along with Devnagari by amending the Official Language Act 1987. “The Bill/Ordinance to introduce Konknni in Roman Script in Schools from Std 1 to the Std X, in a phased manner”, he added.

While disclosing plans to organise a meet your MLAs program in every constituency, Afonso has requested the MLAs of the Minority community to send a letter to the Commissioner of Linguistic Minorities Delhi, to investigate into the discrimination done to Roman Script, for last 36 years.
