MARGAO
When Sonsodo was engulfed by fire on March 5 last, gutting electrical equipment and plastic waste, over a thousand household bins were reduced to ashes, causing a loss to the exchequer running into lakhs.
For, the bins, supplied by the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) for distribution to the households under the door-to-door waste collection project, were all dumped in the open near the electrical equipment.
Instead of distributing the bins to the households, the 1000-odd bins were all dumped at the Old Market garage, before the City Fathers and the Babus decided to transport and dump the bins at Sonsodo.
Questions are being raised why the civic body did not stack the bins at a secure place given that the same were procured by GSUDA by spending taxpayers money.
