MARGAO
Remediation of waste at the Sonsodo waste dumping site is expected to be finally completed in all respects before the onset of monsoons.
Managing Director of Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), Ankit Yadav, IAS, along with corporation officials and staff, besides Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar and Chairman of the Margao garbage management committee, councillor Camilo Barretto inspected the Sonsodo waste dump on Friday to take stock of the ongoing remediation works.
GWMC officials explained to the MD that remediation of the Sonsodo legacy dump has already been completed, adding that the ongoing remediation work pertains to the waste carted out from the Sonsodo waste treatment plant.
After the inspection, Yadav told 'The Goan' that he along with GWMC officials had come to Sonsodo to take a review of the ongoing remediation works in the view of the fast-approaching monsoons.
“We have taken a review of the ongoing remediation work at Sonsodo. We have told the contractor to expedite the work so that the process ends before the onset of monsoons,” he said, adding that the GWMC has also taken note of the directions issued by the High Court on the remediation work at Sonsodo.
MMC Chief Officer Sankhwalkwar said though the GWMC has time till December 2024 to complete the remediation work and transport the RDF to the cement factories, only the piled-up waste carted out from the waste treatment plant remains to be remediated.
“The contractor employed by the GWMC is carrying out the remediation work. They have exuded confidence in completing the work before the onset of monsoons,” he added.
