Rider succumbs to injuries as speeding car hits scooter

The road accident involving a car and two-wheeler near the Nagmodem underpass at Navelim on Saturday morning has claimed the life of a 46-year old two-wheeler rider, Filip Andrew Pereira, a resident of Mandopa-Navelim.

Filip was rushed to the South Goa district hospital after the accident that took place at around 11.30 am, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Both the car and the two-wheeler were proceeding in the same direction towards Navelim when the accident occurred.

In a press release, the Margao police stated that the accused driver of Red colour polo car, Rowan Kayne Rebello, resident of  Sinquetim, Navelim allegedly drove his vehicle in a rash and negligent manner endangering human life while proceeding from Nagmodem-Navelim towards Navelim church when reached at Near Capricon Bar, 1st Dando, Navelim Salcete Goa gave a dash to the black colour active scooter on his right side which was proceeding ahead of the polo car in the same direction.

Due to the impact, the police said the rider of the scooter namely Filip Andrew Pereira fell on the windshield of the polo car and further fell down on the tar road. “The scooter skidded and fell on the right hand side of the road as a result of which the rider of the scooter sustained injuries to his head and other part of the body. He later succumbed to the injuries”, the police said in a press release.

In this connection, a case under section 281 and 106(1) of BNS 2023 has been registered by  the police. Further investigation is being conducted by PSI Shubham Gaonkar.

Meanwhile, social activist Pratima Coutinho along with the family members of deceased Filip Andrew Pereira sought to find out why the driver of the four-wheeler was not immediately sent for medical examination. 

Pratima claimed that the four-wheeler driver was kept seated at the Margao police station for over two hours and was not immediately sent for medical examination for want of a police vehicle.
