Rs 1,000 crore spent on repairing Khazan bundhs: Chief Minister

Funds to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore has been spent by the government on reviving the age old Khazan bundhs in his tenure alone, claimed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday while celebrating International Day of Biodiversity and People's Biodiversity Registers launch event at Neura. 

The Chief Minister was responding to request by local MLA to the government to seek funds to the tune of Rs 5,000 crore from World Bank to revive the over 3,000-year-old Khazan system.

Environment minister Nilesh Cabral said that government efforts are on to revive the 7th century bundh system within a period of next 3 to 4 years with the help of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) and local communities. 

Cabral said that the government is trying to procure funds like Green Climate Fund (GCF) from Union Environment Ministry for the work.

The Union minister for State for Environment Ashwini Kumar Choubey who was present at the event said that recording of the biodiversity through initiatives like the People's Biodiversity Register will help meet the challenges of the future.
