Sancoale Sarpanch, Dy Sarpanch elections set for May 12 after prolonged delay

PANAJI:  The long-pending elections to fill the posts of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch of Sancoale village panchayat in Mormugao taluka will be held on May 12, following an order issued by the Directorate of Panchayats yesterday.

The directive comes just a day before the matter was scheduled for hearing before the High Court, where the delay in conducting elections had been challenged through a petition filed by RTI activist Narayan Naik. The petition had sought directions to the authorities to expedite the process and end the prolonged vacancies in the village panchayat leadership.

As per the order, the election meeting will be presided over by Nicolas Quadros, with alternate arrangements in place in case he is unavailable.
