Sanguem Councillor Messiah Dcosta (Meshu) has accused the Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) of dumping dry and vegetable waste in the open area adjacent to the newly opened Tribal Welfare Centre behind the Sanguem cemetery.
D’Costa said the waste dumped in the area is not only an eyesore but staff and visitors at the Tribal Welfare Centre, as well as people visiting the cemetery are subjected to constant stench emanating from the waste.
“The SMC have enough open space available at Gunjimol and the council had even informed the High Court of this site for the disposal of dry waste and construction of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) plant,” said D’Costa.
When contacted, SMC Vice Chairperson Queiroz Cruz informed that the construction of the MRF plant at Gunjimol is presently on hold after residents in the area raised objections to the setting up of an MRF plant in the locality.
“After dumping waste near the cemetery, it is covered with mud. Dry waste is presently being dumped in low-lying areas and needs to be filled to bring it to the ground level,” said Cruz.
