Following the unfortunate death of a 42-year-old student with intellectual disabilities after falling from the old Sanjay School building at Porvorim, last month, the North District Collector has decided to relocate the Vocational Centre and Higher Secondary of Sanjay Centre for Special Education to the Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter, Porvorim on top priority.
North Goa District Collector in a letter to the Penha-Da-Franca Sarpanch has directed to make arrangements to hand over the Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter, Porvorim premise to Sanjay Centre on top priority as a stop-gap arrangement till the premises of Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary (old building) is ready for shifting.
The student with intellectual disabilities had fallen from the building on August 31 when the victim along with his mother had visited the school to update his Aadhaar Card. While they were on the second floor, his mother went inside to submit the documents and the victim was standing outside. Tragically, while leaning against a railing, it gave way, resulting in a devastating fall.
The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities Guruprasad Pawaskar had then written to the North Collector strongly recommending taking urgent steps to vacate the dilapidated old SCERT building and to relocate the Vocational Centre and Higher Secondary of Sanjay Centre for Special Education as expeditiously as possible taking into consideration the seriousness of the situation.
Additional Collector Rohit Kadam said that considering the circumstances and seriousness of the case, directions are issued to the Sarpanch to immediately hand over the premise.
