Hundreds of condemned vehicles belonging to government departments, State-owned corporations and autonomous bodies have been scrapped in Goa over the past seven months, clearing long standing clutter from public spaces and generating revenue.
According to official data, four “scrap fairs” organized by the Goa Waste Management Corporation have disposed of 518 vehicles, including two wheelers and four wheelers. The sale has brought in Rs 2.77 crore to the State exchequer.
Many of the vehicles had been lying unused for years, some more than 15 years old, parked outside offices or on roads where they contributed to congestion.
Earlier, disposal was carried out through a tendering process that officials described as slow and cumbersome. The fairs were introduced as a quicker mechanism to streamline the process.
A top Finance Department official said the initiative was aimed at expediting the removal of condemned vehicles while ensuring transparency in the process.
The cleared vehicles include those from multiple government departments and State owned bodies. Officials said the fairs would continue periodically to prevent accumulation of scrap vehicles in the future.
For commuters and residents, the removal of abandoned vehicles has eased congestion in some areas and reduced the visual blight of rusting hulks in public spaces.
