SGPDA gets 7-day deadline to stop dumping wet waste near PDA parking lot toilet

MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council has set seven-day deadline on the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) to stop dumping wet and mixed waste near the Sulabh toilet near the PDA parking lot.

MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Thursday issued a notice to the SGPDA under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 to comply with the direction or threatened to stop collection of waste from the SGPDA market. The Chief Officer further threatened to take appropriate action against the PDA, any such action will be the sole responsibility of the PDA office.

In the notice, the Chief Officer drew attention of the PDA Member Secretary that the waste collection in the SGPDA retail market is not in a segregated manner, with both wet and dry waste mixed together and  dumped near the Sulabh toilet block.

It was pointed out that the PDA  was requested to direct the agency/contractor to collect the waste in segregated manner and to stack it into 240 litre dustbin with lid so that the Municipal trucks can transport the waste to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant.

The Chief Officer lamented that till date, no action has been taken by the PDA to comply the direction given by the MMC, adding that the PDA should immediately direct the agency/contractor to collect the waste in a segregated manner and stack the same in 240 litre dustbins with lids so that stray cattles and dogs does not scatter the waste and create an eyesore.
