PANAJI: In response to the stampede during the Zatra on May 2, which resulted in six fatalities and several injuries, the Shree Lairai Devasthan Committee has decided that, from next year, no stalls will be allowed along the main road leading to the temple. The decision, announced by Committee President Dinanath Gaonkar, comes after instructions from the police and the Mamlatdar’s office regarding the management of traffic in the Maye, Moira, Aldona, and Bastora areas.
Speaking to the media, Gaonkar assured that steps would be taken to address the encroachments on these roads that hinder smooth traffic flow to Shirgao, a significant concern raised in the wake of the stampede. “From next year onwards, no stalls will be put up along the road leading to the temple,” Gaonkar stated.
While the committee took proactive steps to prevent further mishaps, Gaonkar strongly denied any responsibility for the fatal incident, instead pointing the finger at the previous committee. “It was the responsibility of the retiring committee to coordinate with the police and the administration,” he said. “They should have called a joint meeting to plan the event, but they failed to do so. The retiring committee also did not provide clear instructions regarding the wood used for the Homkhand.”
Gaonkar further clarified his committee’s position, insisting that the incident was not due to any negligence on their part. “The Shirgao Village Panchayat, the Bicholim Deputy Collector’s office, and the State administration were accountable for the mismanagement that led to the incident,” he added.
The committee had corresponded with the Mamlatdar on April 2, requesting guidance for the Zatra celebrations. In response, the Mamlatdar issued instructions on April 15 for the officers to attend the meeting. However, according to Gaonkar, the Mamlatdar did not attend himself, and instead, Joint Mamlatdar 2 and PI of the Police attended the meeting, where the instructions were given but ultimately not followed.
“We don’t have any allegations against anyone, but we will ensure that the necessary precautions are taken next year to prevent such incidents,” Gaonkar concluded.
