Outrage over the suspected destruction of centuries-old trees in Siolim spilled onto the streets, as residents and activists staged a candlelight protest at Soro Junction along the Siolim“Assagao road.

What began as quiet anger quickly turned into a strong show of unity, with locals gathering in large numbers to condemn what they called the “butchering” of trees believed to be over 200 years old. Holding candles and placards, the crowd initially stood in silence before raising slogans demanding accountability.

Activists alleged that the trees were felled during a late-night operation under questionable circumstances. “These are not just trees, they are living heritage. You cannot erase two centuries of history overnight,” said one protester.

The Goa Green Brigade claimed the felling may have occurred despite a High Court stay order, raising serious legal concerns. “If true, this is not just an environmental crime but a violation of the law,” an activist said, urging immediate action.

Residents expressed frustration over what they see as a pattern of unchecked destruction. “Today it’s these trees, tomorrow it will be something else. If we don’t act now, we will lose what makes this place special,” a villager said.

The protest drew people of all ages, reflecting a shared sense of loss. Protesters have demanded a thorough probe, strict action against those responsible, and stronger safeguards to protect the region’s remaining green cover.
