MARGAO
In an interesting development, the Margao Municipal Council has placed under suspension the driver of the Municipal garbage truck, which was stopped by residents of Pilerne village when the vehicle was transporting Sonsodo waste to the Saligao waste treatment plant on August 12.
Margao Municipal Chief Officer Gaurish Sankhwalkar issued an order placing the driver under suspension for allegedly violating the guidelines set by the Civic body in respect of the transportation of waste from Sonsodo to Saligao. Two other employees, including a supervisor were issued show cause notice, over the Pilerne incident.
Sources informed that the truck driver was placed under suspension for deviating from the route leading to the Saligao plant. A senior officer pointed out that the truck driver was mandated to drive to the Saligao plant via the highway and not by the internal village road.
“By issuing the suspension order, the Chief Officer has sent a message loud and clear to the Civic employees involved in garbage collection and transportation that he means business, more so when the High Court is closely monitoring the Sonsodo waste disposal issue”, remarked a Civic official.
In fact, the suspension of the Municipal truck driver has come ahead of the hearing of the PIL on Sonsodo scheduled to come up for hearing in the High Court on August 28.
