The Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police are investigating nine Instagram accounts belonging to minor girls from a prestigious school in Panaji, for allegedly posting manipulated videos of their schoolmate.
While the fake profile creators are not booked pending preliminary inquiry into the FIR, the complainant victim alleged her morphed photos were uploaded on social media to tarnish her reputation. She alleged that this act was a personal vendetta against her.
The Cyber Crime Police claimed the sleuths led by SP Akshat Kaushal and PI Satish Padwalkar are investigating cases of fraudulent Instagram and Facebook profiles as well as online financial fraud targeting senior citizens.
In a separate case, the Cyber Crime Police is also probing into a complaint filed by a retired senior citizen who fell victim to a scam, losing Rs 1.18 crore. The fraudsters posed as FedEx, claiming his parcel was seized by the Mumbai crime branch with drugs.
"In an attempt to resolve the issue, the victim transferred the amount and ultimately lost it to fraudsters. On closely monitoring the transaction pattern, it was revealed that some funds were routed to Abu Dhabi. Similar fraud activities were reported from Merces," an official said.
The sleuths also made an arrest of a Margao native for creating a fake Instagram account impersonating his ex-girlfriend and sharing explicit photos. The accused Sameer Hazara, is further remanded to one day of Police Custody to be subsequently produced before the Children's Court in Panaji.
