The suspect sopo collection system at the Panaji market is in practice for 10 to 15 years and it is being investigated to figure out who is involved and who is benefitting said Clen Madeira, the Commissioner of the Corporation of City of Panaji.
Madeira said, the sopo collectors pass on the day's collection to the market supervisor who in turn deposits it in the CCP treasury on a daily basis.
He said, action will be taken against all those involved in the alleged sopo collection scam, adding that it seems to be a big chain which has been going on for around 10-15 years.
Madeira said he is investigating the matter to find out who all are responsible and if anyone benefited personally.
Former mayor Uday Madkaikar had recently alleged a scam and posted a video in which he is seen arguing with a man who was allegedly collecting the sopo from market vendors without issuing any receipts.
