The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services in the year 2020 handled various Fire and Emergency cases which included serious Chemicals Gas Leakages, Liquefied Gas Leakages, Electrical Fires, Flood Rescue, Animal Rescue, Chemical Spillage, Road Accidents, Dry Grass Fires & Urban Fires in the line of duty.
During the year 2020, the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services have collectively attended 2,317 fire calls and 3,839 emergency calls, saving 96 human lives and 585 animal lives apart from saving/salvaging property worth Rs 24.45 crore with timely action of the fire personnel.
The firefighters across the State worked tirelessly to ensure that the citizens get the required assistance when Cyclone Nisarga made landfall in northern Maharashtra from June 1, 2020, to June 5, 2020, leaving a trail of destruction in faraway Goa after gusty winds hit Goa at a speed of 80-100 kph and heavy rain damaged trees and homes across the State. During the cyclonic storm, the department had attended 201 emergency calls, saving property worth Rs 34.06 lakh and saving 13 lives of animals.
The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services also undertook sanitization drive across Goa in view of COVID-19. The Directorate of Fire & Emergency Services with its 15 Fire Station in the State undertook the task of sanitization by engaging the Fire Officers & Fire Personnel.
All public places prioritized by the respective municipality or panchayat and recommended by the Directorate of Municipal Administration or the Directorate of Village Panchayats -- Bus Stands & Bus Stops, Community Halls, Markets Places, Panchayats Offices, Temple Premises, Government Offices, Secretariat Complex, Ministerial Block, Assembly Complex, Fish Markets, Church Premises, Covid wards at Goa Medical College, Goa Dental College, Health Centers, Ferry Boats of River Navigation Department, Taxi Stands, Electricity Departments, Police Station/ Out Posts, check post areas, Sports Complex, Banks, Goa Dairy, Ravindra Bhavan were sanitized. 3,864 places were sanitized by the Fire Personnel across the State of Goa.
Till date, 75 fire personnel were infected with the Covid in the line of duty and were cured and resumed duties.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, felicitated 97 Fire Personnel with Commendation Certificate for their meritorious and dedicated work on the occasion of Goa Statehood Day May 20, 2020.
On the occasion of 60th Goa Liberation Day, three fire personnel namely Ashok Parab, Sub-Officer; Deepak Shetgaonkar, Leading Fire Fighter & Sitaram Kamat, Watch Room Operator was awarded Goa Chief Minister Fire Service Medal for meritorious service.
