As the deadline to ensure stoppage of the release of water drips from air conditioners (ACs) ends on Saturday, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) is set to begin inspecting public places for compliance.
Several pedestrians have been facing problems due to consistent water drips from ACs, creating slippery and hazardous conditions on footpaths. With no relief despite numerous complaints to the concerned offices and buildings, GOACAN launched Umbrella Protest to catch the attention of the CCP.
The Corporation, taking cognizance of the campaign, issued a Public Notice earlier this month stating, "It has been brought to the notice of this Corporation that water from the ACs is being released directly on the pavements within the Panaji City. The said act causes public nuisance to pedestrians using pavements/footpaths. As such the concerned owners/offenders are directed to ensure that this act is immediately stopped, failing which the CCP shall take necessary action against such owners/offenders with effect from April 15, 2023."
CCP sources suggested that such premises owners can take necessary measures to prevent water dripping from ACs, such as installing drip trays, regular maintenance, and timely repairs.
"The aim is to create safe and pedestrian-friendly footpaths for the community. Pedestrians and any citizen are also encouraged to report any instances of water dripping from ACs to the municipality, so that appropriate action can be taken to rectify the issue," a councillor said.
GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins said that they will follow up on the issue with the CCP and also submit a list of defaulting offices and buildings to the Mayor and the Commissioner for appropriate and immediate action.
