Traditional fishermen along the Baina and Desterro areas will soon have space for as many as 500 canoes during the rains.
Stating this to reporters after launching a garbage collection vehicle on Friday, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar said the project would be taken up at the cost of Rs 8 crore.
"Traditional fishermen, especially from Baina and Desterro, have been neglected for a very long time and they don't have any facilities for net bending shed, landing ramp, wholesale market or even space to place their boats during rains,” said Amonkar.
“They sometimes have to park in distant areas like Velsao, Hollant, etc. and it sometimes leads to friction and I decided to take their issue in the assembly after having a meeting with them and followed up their issues with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and WRD Minister Shubash Shirodkar.”
“Space will now be made available to these fishermen at the extreme end of Baina beach by building retaining walls on both sides through WRD department that will enable to store around 500 canoes belonging to these traditional fishermen at the cost of Rs 8 crore,” he added.
Amonkar said there has also been a rise in tourists at Baina beach but there are no facilities like toilets, bathrooms or changing rooms.
“We have had an inspection of the beach. We will soon take this proposal as well and provide all facilities at Baina beach through the tourism department," said Amonkar.
Speaking on the launch of a garbage collection vehicle, Amonkar said that the vehicle was provided under "Swaccha Bharat, Nital Goem" through the CSR initiative by JSW company.
"People faced injustice because this garbage collection vehicle service was stopped and the vehicle was shifted to some other location for reasons not known to me. Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho took the initiative and got this vehicle launched again through the CSR by JSW company and this vehicle will cater to the constituencies of Vasco, Mormugao and Dabolim. This vehicle will be used to clear construction debris, branches and garbage on the roadsides. We will also have a WhatsApp group where people can post pictures and locations and it will be cleared immediately," said Amonkar.
