A truck caught fire in the middle of the Atal Setu bridge (third Mandovi bridge). The fire which emanated from the front of the truck continued for about half an hour.
Traffic on the bridge was disrupted for some time due to the incident.
The cause of the fire was learnt to be a short circuit in the engine of the truck. The fire spread from the engine, cabin and to front tyres which got totally burnt till the fire personnel arrived at the spot.
The incident happened at around 1.45 pm when the driver saw the fumes coming out from the vehicle KA 22 C 4696 which was headed towards Maharastra from Karnataka. Truck was loaded with cement.The truck driver immediately got off the truck and alerted the fire personnel. The fire personnel later doused the blaze.
The fire personnel were also able to remove a 5 kg gas cylinder from cabin kept for cooking purposes which couild have aggravated the fire. As per information from the fire personnel, there was no damage to the bridge.
Fire personnel Subhash Naik, Nitin Shirodkar, G S Fadte and Mahesh Divkar participated in dousing the blaze. The Porvorim police also rushed to the spot and conducted a panchanama of the incident.
