Uganda inmate booked for assaulting jail staff

PANAJI
Three days after the Colvale Central Jail reported the assault on a Nigerian woman inmate allegedly by its staff, another woman undertrial from Uganda is now booked for attacking two matrons and a security guard on Saturday.

The Colvale police have registered an offence under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against Minamu Hafusa based on a complaint filed by Jail Superintendent Shankar Gaonkar. As per preliminary inquiry, the woman attacked the security personnel at the main entrance of the prison around 12.20 pm and hurt the matrons by ‘biting them hard and stabbing them with a safety stick’ when the women staff tried to diffuse the situation.

Hafusa is undergoing trial for allegedly killing Aldona resident Zeferino Barretto, whose body with his face smashed was found in a lane near the Baga Bridge in January 2020. The woman worked as a waiter at a Guirim hotel. Three days ago, a Nigerian under trial was allegedly beaten by the male staff for reasons still unknown.
