In a bid to ease the language barrier problem faced by students from mofussil areas, the University Grants Commission has asked all central universities across the country to allow the choice of writing exams in regional languages even if the medium of teaching is English.
The proposal was conveyed to Universities by UGC Chief M Jagadesh Kumar has written a letter to all central universities asking them to promote in teaching and learning the use of local and regional languages.
Kumar suggested that Universities should permit students to write the exams in regional languages, even if the subjects are taught in the English medium and encouraged the varisities to promote translation of original writing to regional languages.
“Once teaching, learning and assessment are done in the local languages, the student engagement will eventually increase leading to an increase in success rate. This will significantly strengthen the efforts of achieving the target of enhancing the GER in higher education from 27 per cent to 50 per cent by 2035,” Kumar said in the letter.
Through the letter, Kumar has also sought from the varsities, information pertaining to list of books referred for teaching in local or regional languages as well as faculty available who are conversant and can teach in local languages.
