Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has attributed the recent surge in robberies across Goa to rising unemployment in the State and the country.
Speaking on the issue, Lobo emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras along the coastal belt and key areas of the State.
“Unemployment is the biggest problem we are facing in India and in Goa. When people are unemployed, robberies are bound to increase. Those involved in these crimes are mostly outsiders. They come to Goa, survey the area, and target vulnerable spots,” Lobo said.
He urged both the Central and State governments to take immediate steps to address the unemployment crisis, which he believes is a driving factor behind the rising crime rate.
Lobo also mentioned that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant held a review meeting with the police, during which assurances were made to increase security across the State.
Lobo called for the installation of CCTV cameras in prime locations to help curb thefts and enhance detection.
“Once a surveillance system is in place, thefts will reduce, and the detection of criminals will improve,” he added.
In addition to the spike in robberies, Lobo expressed concern about the increase in road accidents, which he attributed to rash and negligent riding.
He stressed the need for better enforcement of traffic laws to reduce accidents on Goa’s roads.
