In a surprising turn of events during the 2022 assembly polls, Bardez, a traditional stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saw a significant shift when four out of the seven seats were won by Congress candidates. Among the victorious were the Lobo couple, further highlighting the sway of influential and popular leaders and unexpected outcomes.
However, the political landscape quickly evolved as three of the four Congress winners defected to the BJP within a year. This rapid shift has spurred discussions on the potential impact of a united opposition against the BJP in future elections.
Recent parliamentary elections projections indicate that a unified opposition could have posed a significant challenge to the BJP.
An analysis based on the 2022 assembly polls suggests that a joint opposition candidate could have secured victory in six out of the seven constituencies in Bardez taluka.
CONSTITUENCY ANALYSIS
PORVORIM: BJP’s Rohan Khuante delivered an impressive performance, garnering 11,714 votes. His margin was substantial, outpacing the combined opposition votes (Congress, TMC, AAP, and NCP) which totalled 9,050. Notably, RGP did not field a candidate in Porvorim.
TIVIM: BJP’s Nilkant Halarnkar received 9,414 votes, narrowly surpassing the combined opposition tally of 9,119 votes (excluding RGP).
RGP President Manoj Parab, in his first assembly election, polled 5,051 votes, indicating that RGP’s participation in an opposition alliance could be detrimental to BJP.
CALANGUTE: Michael Lobo, who switched from BJP to Congress on the eve of the elections, won decisively. The combined votes of TMC, AAP, and RGP candidates (4,307) suggest that a united opposition could have further widened the gap.
SIOLIM: Delilah Lobo, Michael’s wife, captured the seat from BJP with a 1,727 vote margin on a Congress ticket. The margin could have increased significantly with the addition of TMC, AAP, NCP, and RGP votes, highlighting the potential of an opposition alliance.
ALDONA: Glenn Ticlo of BJP lost to Congress’ Carlos Ferreira by 1,800 votes. An alliance could have increased Ferreira's margin by approximately 5,000 votes, considering the support from TMC, AAP, and Shiv Sena.
MAPUSA: BJP’s Joshua D’Souza secured 10,195 votes, while a joint opposition (Congress, TMC, AAP, RGP, and Shiv Sena) tallied around 12,547 votes, indicating a possible opposition win.
SALIGAO: Congress’ Kedar Naik won with 10,045 votes against the BJP's 8,146. An additional 3,000 votes from TMC, AAP, and RGP could have further solidified Naik’s victory.
While the idea of a united opposition presents a significant challenge to BJP, forming such an alliance comes with its own set of difficulties, including the need to manage ambitions of various leaders. Despite BJP's confidence in maintaining its stronghold, the potential of an opposition alliance could reshape the political dynamics in the upcoming 2027 assembly polls.
As the political climate evolves, the possibility of an opposition alliance remains a critical factor that could influence future elections in Bardez and beyond.
