Unity Mall project: CM says open to dialogue with Chimbel residents

PANAJI

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Monday said he is open to discussions with residents of Chimbel who are opposing the proposed Unity Mall project, and invited them to meet him to address their concerns.

Speaking to media persons, Sawant clarified that all statutory procedures and approvals for the project have been completed. He said the Unity Mall is being constructed on government land and is fully funded by the Government of India.

He said that the government is willing to engage in dialogue with villagers to clear any misconceptions about the project. "Chimbel residents should meet me to discuss their opposition to the Unity Mall project," he added.

Responding to environmental concerns raised by locals, the Chief Minister assured that Toyyar Lake, which is notified under biodiversity norms, will be protected. “The lake will not be destroyed under any circumstances. All biodiversity-related norms will be strictly followed,” he said.

Sawant said the Unity Mall will benefit Goans and serve as a platform to promote local products. “One entire floor of the Unity Mall will be dedicated to self-help group women and local entrepreneurs. It will empower them by providing space to showcase and sell their products,” he said.

The Chief Minister maintained that the project is aimed at boosting local entrepreneurship and economic opportunities.
