Venzy demands support for arecanut farmers hit by rains

PANAJI
Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas has raised urgent concerns about the severe impact of continuous heavy rains on arecanut farmers in Goa.

Viegas reported that nearly 50% of the arecanut crop across the State has been damaged due to the relentless downpour, which has been ongoing for the past two weeks.

Viegas highlighted that arecanut is a crucial cash crop for many families in Goa, particularly in regions such as Sanguem, Sakhalim, Sattari, Bicholim, Pernem, and Ponda. The damage to this crop poses a significant economic threat to the farming community, affecting their livelihood and financial stability.

The MLA noted that despite implementing good management practices, including timely Bordeaux spray, farmers in the Dabal area have experienced over a 50% loss of their arecanut yield. The incessant rains have compounded the damage, undermining efforts to protect the crop.

Viegas called for the provision of crop loss compensation for arecanut farmers, similar to the support extended to paddy farmers. He emphasised the need for weather-based crop insurance to mitigate such risks in the future.

Viegas mentioned that arecanut farmers are willing to share the cost of the insurance premium to ensure they are better protected against adverse weather conditions.
