The Verla-Canca panchayat on Saturday warned all vendors and hawkers at the Canca circle to either stop doing business on the roadside or face eviction.
All the vendors/hawkers who have been illegally carrying out business in the road widening areas were told to stop selling goods and clear the area.
“From tomorrow (Sunday), we will evict all the vendors/hawkers who sit on the road widening areas. We will lift them along with their goods if they are found sitting here,” warned Milton Marques, Sarpanch of Verla Canca.
According to the sarpanch, the panchayat had issued a written notice to all the hawkers at the Canca circle at least a month ago.
“Despite the letter and verbal warnings, they have continued to do business by the roadside. This time, we will take strict action and no one will be allowed to do business by the roadside,” he said.
Marques said the particular main road was a major district road and the presence of the hawkers acted as hindrance for smooth movement of vehicles near the Canca circle.
A Verla-Canca panchayat member, Sagar Lingudkar said he had complained against the roadside vendors/hawkers some months ago but received no cooperation from the panchayat or the police.
“Soon after the lockdown was lifted, several hawkers had set up roadside business in Canca. I had asked authorities to take action against them but no one listened to my appeals then,” Lingudkar said.
He said nobody had informed him about the awareness drive conducted by the panchayat on Saturday.
