Following the case at Mopa, where in a bungalow power was being tapped illegally and far beyond the load applied for, the Electricity Department is planning to intensify vigilance over such illegalities by consumers across the State.
Power Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar on Wednesday said, Electricity Department officials will inspect every household in the State to check if the load applied for is not substantially higher than the amount of power being utilised by consumers.
“Each and every household both in panchayat as well as municipal areas will be checked thoroughly,” Dhavalikar said, adding that "appropriate action" will be initiated wherever there are variations.
Earlier this week, a team of the department had descended on a bungalow at Mopa in Pernem taluka and on inspection found glaring illegalites. The consumer was then served a notice to pay up several lakhs of rupees in penalties.
Meanwhile, Dhavalikar said to ensure quality power supply services from the department, the onus is also on consumers to adhere to the rules.
He was responding to a query on the proposal of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for the utility to compensate consumers for lack of quality in its services, including power failures.
Meanwhile, Dhavalikar also defended the power tariff hike made effective recently, arguing that power is the cheapest in Goa among several States.
