Dumping of waste in Nullahs and creeks is being linked to the waterlogging issues in Panaji and the Corporation of the City of Panaji Mayor Rohit Monserrate has now appealed to the people of Panaji to avoid and discourage others from dumping garbage by the roadside and in drains.
Every year, the Capital City gets inundated during heavy rains and high tides. Waste clogged in the nullahs has added to the problem.
“Despite the door-to-door garbage collection system, many people from the city are dumping waste like plastic in the nullah and creeks, which is blocking the nullahs,” said Monserrate, in a message on social media.
“CCP workers are repeatedly taking out waste from the St Inez creek and nullahs, but the quantum of waste is so much that it still remains in the nullah.”
"My sincere request to the people of Panaji is to avoid and discourage others from dumping garbage on the roadside and in drains,” said Moserrate, while sharing photographs of plastic bottles and other waste which have been cleaned from drains.
"Without your support, it would be difficult for us to keep the drainage clean,” he added.
A CCP officer said plastic bottles, mattresses, wooden shelves, debris and other things were found while cleaning the Nullah.
"Beer cans, alcohol bottles, diapers and sanitary pads are the common things which are found in nullahs and creek,” said the CCP cleaning engineer.
Some people have demanded placement of dustbins in public places as tourists have no other option rather than throw garbage in the open.
