Transportation of the legacy waste has begun from the site at Sada-Vasco after a long gap since the pandemic and the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has stated that around 50 per cent of the inert waste has been cleared from the site.
MMC Chairperson Damodar Kaskar and Ward Councillor Prajay Mayekar conducted a site inspection to take stock of the situation.
Speaking to reporters, Kaskar said there was a huge dump of legacy waste pending for over 30 years which was lying at the garbage dumping site in Sada.
"Our MLA and Urban Development Minster Milind Naik appointed a contractor through the Goa Waste Management authority to clear the legacy waste and treat it,” said Kaskar.
“Though the entire legacy waste was treated and cleared, the by-products remained at the site. The inert waste and the RDF was supposed to be transported out of this site but we were stuck amid the pandemic and there was shortage of labour and issues of transportation.”
“However, the transportation of this inert waste and RDF has now commenced and very soon, the entire site will be cleared," said Kaskar.
Mayekar said the site inspection was carried out to ascertain the quantity of inert waste which had been transported from the site.
"We have inspected the site and we are happy that the transportation of the inert waste and RDF has begun and this site is almost being cleared out.”
“As of now, transportation is going on and around 50 per cent of the inert waste has been cleared. Within the next two months, this entire dumps of inert waste and RDF will be cleared,” said Mayekar, who has thanked the government for its help to clear the huge pending dumps of legacy waste.
