On the directive of the Bombay High Court at Goa, the Water Resources Department (WRD) is set to conduct a site inspection of the natural spring at Oxel in Siolim on Tuesday, November 5, at 11 am.
The inspection will involve all stakeholders and aims to assess the impact of ongoing construction activities near the spring.
The High Court’s order comes in response to petitions from local activists and residents who raised concerns about the potential irreversible damage the construction of villas could cause to the heritage spring.
In its ruling, the court highlighted that “construction of villas is a luxury and not a necessity,” emphasizing the need to protect the area’s natural resources.
In a significant development, the builder involved in the project had submitted an undertaking to the High Court, committing to halt all construction activities at the site until the court resolves the matter.
This decision has been welcomed by local community members who have long voiced their opposition to the project.
Activists from the Goa Green Brigade, along with concerned citizens, are calling for a gathering at the inspection site to demonstrate solidarity during this critical moment.
The event will feature a vigil and community meeting aimed at raising awareness about the environmental implications of the construction project.
The local community had expressed substantial opposition to the construction, fearing that it could adversely affect the delicate ecosystem surrounding the spring.
