3 convicts to be free birds on I-Day, Cabinet okays release

Three convicts, two of whom are serving rigorous imprisonment for culpable homicide, will be released on August 15, 2023 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.  

The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting wherein the members approved the screening committee’s recommendation to grant remission/pardon to Sayyed Zubair, Ajit Bezbaruah and Vinay Kerkatta. 

Of the three, Kerkatta has served five years, six months and 29 days of imprisonment. The Court had awarded him seven years of RI and a fine of Rs 10,000.

Bezbaruh has served seven years and seven months of imprisonment out of 10 years RI ordered by the Court. The third accused is a convict in an assault case. 

Among other Cabinet decisions, the Public Works Department will acquire over 2 lakh sq mtrs of land belonging to the Water Resources Department for the western bypass project.
