Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira on Monday accused the State government of misleading the Goa Legislative Assembly over the National Education Policy (NEP) Task Force’s recommendation regarding the use of the Romi Konkani script.

Raising a point of order at the start of the session, Ferreira alleged that a false statement had been made in the House about the Task Force not recommending the Romi script.

Tabling a copy of the Task Force report, he pointed out that the document clearly suggests the introduction of both Devnagri and Romi Konkani scripts at the preparatory stage to promote multilingualism among students.

“The NEP Task Force report clearly states that multilingualism should be encouraged, and both Devnagri and Romi Konkani should be introduced at the preparatory stage. The government cannot mislead the House on record,” Ferreira said.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant clarified that the Task Force’s recommendation regarding the Romi script was in a general sense – referring to the English alphabet (A, B, C) – and not specifically Romi Konkani. “The Romi script is already being implemented along with Devnagri,” Sawant said, downplaying suggestions of any policy omission.
