Raising concern over delays in surgeries at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bicholim MLA Chandrankant Shetye on Monday urged the government to urgently augment ICU facilities, stating that the shortage of intensive care beds with ventilators is causing distress to patients awaiting operations.

Speaking during Zero Hour in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Shetye said there is growing concern, fear and disappointment among patients from across the State who are referred to GMC for surgical procedures.

He pointed out that several surgeries are being delayed as patients are often asked to wait for days due to the unavailability of ICU beds equipped with ventilators.

The MLA said timely surgical intervention is critical for recovery and any delay can aggravate patients’ health conditions.

The current situation, he said, is placing immense mental and emotional strain on patients and their families who travel to the state’s premier government hospital with the hope of receiving prompt treatment.

Shetye urged the government to take immediate steps to increase the number of ICU beds with ventilator support at GMC to ensure that surgeries are conducted without unnecessary delay and to strengthen the State’s healthcare system.
