VIP constituency, filthy backyards

If treating garbage has been an enigma to the State, thenPorvorim cannot be far behind.

Home to the VIPs the fast growing Porvorim has beengrappling with the problem of treating its waste.

Village Panchayats of Penha de Franca, Salvador do Mundo andSocorro makes up the Porvorim constituency, which has a population of around22,000 people.

Prominent people including bureaucrats, politicians, journalists, and police officials have made their home in this constituency.

Of the three panchayats, Penha de Franca has been doing itsbest to treat its garbage. Door to door collection has been successfullycarried out in ward no 8 and also in some areas of ward no 7, 9 and 10 while afew other wards in the panchayat are still struggling.

In fact in ward no 8 garbage has been successfullysegregated at source, collected and finally treated.

The unique initiative to collect door to door garbage inward no 8 was started three years ago. LILA Digital and Environmental SolutionPvt Ltd with the backing of Fomento Resources, have been currently workingtowards treating the garbage in ward no 8.

“The problem is not confined only to Porvorim. Every villagein the State is grappling with this problem. In Penha de Franca we hadundertaken an initiative where a small composting pit was setup which used totreat bio degradable waste into organic waste,” said Pradeep Sarmokadam, director, LILA Digital and Environmental Solution Pvt Ltd.

“Currently we are handling half a ton of garbage everyday.  The Panchayat has now moved aproposal to set up a garbage treatment plant,” he said.

The Village Panchayat of Socorro has begun with door to doorcollection of waste. But since it does not have a treatment plant the garbageis being dumped into a quarry in the village. The village is generating aroundtwo ton of garbage monthly.

Shital Arolkar, Sarpanch of Socorro said: “We have starteddoor to door collection in the village which is being segregated.  Land admeasuring 2500sqmts is identified toset up a treatment plant. The project file has been moved to thegovernment”.

Salvador do Mundo is the only panchayat in the constituency, which has not taken any initiative to tackle its garbage.

“Currently there is no door to door collection happening inthe village. We have identified land but waiting for government to gives usassistance. We have been assured by our MLA that he will help us,” said RajeshSavaikar, Sarpanch of Salvador do Mundo.

Local MLA, Rohan Khaunte said: “I’m waiting for governmentto come up with a road map on tackling the garbage imbroglio. I have requestedthe government to set up a treatment plant for Porvorim which can solve ourproblem.”
