‘Innocence of Muslims’ sparks global debate

A low-budget film depicting the Muslim Prophet Muhammad as amanipulative, war-mongering playboy ” and reportedly promoted by fringe USpastor Terry Jones ” was dubbed into Arabic and posted on YouTube, sparkingoutrage among Muslims in Egypt and Libya at first, before spreading to Asiancountries.

In Cairo, thousands of protesters marched outside the USembassy, where they breached the citadel-like consulate walls.

In Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, gunmen stormed theconsulate, setting the building alight and killing four staff , including USambassador Chris Stevens, who was a staunch supporter of Libya’s revolutionagainst dictator Mohammed Gaddafi . US officials suspect the attack on theambassador might have been planned in advance.

While the video, a roughshod production that depicted theMuslim Prophet Muhammad as a violent and barbaric philanderer, was a triggerfor the violence, longstanding grievances against US influence in the region.

In some cases, local political groups or even governments, appeared to use the video as cover for their own political gain ” whether inbids to seek popularity or to deflect attention from their own economic andpolitical malaise.
