Anganwadi teachers' case and misuse of authority

The recent news of Anganwadi teachers being cleared of false charges is welcome, but it exposes a disturbing misuse of police authority. Law enforcement officials, entrusted with protecting citizens, should never resort to filing false or exaggerated complaints to intimidate peaceful demonstrators. In one instance, an allegation of a police personnel being bitten was made without any supporting medical record. Such claims reveal how easily cases can be fabricated, forcing poor Anganwadi teachers to run from pillar to post for justice in a case filed as far back as 2021. Years of mental stress, financial burden, and repeated court appearances could have been avoided through honest investigation. Credit must be given to the sitting MLA and advocate, Carlos Alvares Ferreira, for diligently representing the teachers before the Judicial Magistrate First Class in Panaji and ensuring that justice ultimately prevailed. This episode raises serious questions about police training, accountability, and ethics. Cases should be registered only when supported by credible evidence capable of withstanding judicial scrutiny, instead of punishing innocent citizens while matters drag on for years before acquittal. Reforms are needed.
