Democracy requires the rule of constitutional law, and unless vital police reforms are permitted by the political class, the Police Bill amended in line with the directions issued by the Supreme Court in 2006, and the many police commissions’ and seminars’ recommendations ” most buried or gathering dust ” implemented to turn the police force from a handmaiden of the ruling party into a people’s police service, law and order in Goa will keep deteriorating for the citizens. The case of activist Rama Kankonkar, attacked by goons in broad daylight, his recovery, and his statement to the press in GMC alleging government involvement, along with the speed of police investigations, leaking of information to the press, and statements from the government, are not reassuring and leave much to be desired. He did mention the names of politicians suspected, and stated that the police at first did not record it. The public would like to see transparency and accountability ” what proper interrogation of the apprehended goons reveals, and most of all, the mastermind and reasons for this dastardly attack ” with justice being served, be you ever so high or low. This will not happen without increasing public pressure on the government by all citizens.
