Association petitions PDA to fix infrastructure and improve utilities
The infrastructure at the SGPDA mega retail market is crumbling.

Nearly 24 years after the SGPDA Mega Retail Market — once touted as the State’s premier planned market complex — was inaugurated with much fanfare, its fish, fruit, and vegetable vendors have now appealed to the PDA Member Secretary to restore the market to its former glory.
The vendors highlighted how the complex has gradually deteriorated over the years due to poor maintenance and neglect. They urged the authorities to install individual electricity meters and ensure a regular water supply, especially to the fish market section.
The delegation also drew attention to the damaged floor tiles, which they said pose a safety hazard to both shoppers and vendors. Additionally, they demanded a systematic system for garbage collection and disposal within the premises.
Fish Vendors’ Association president Felix Gonsalves noted that this was the first time the SGPDA market vendors had directly approached the PDA member secretary to voice their grievances.
“The officer gave us a patient hearing and informed us that the PDA has already prepared a plan for the renovation and repair of the mega market,” Gonsalves said.
He added, “The sooner the market is repaired and renovated, the better it will be for both the PDA and the shoppers. We, the vendors, are willing to pay a reasonable maintenance fee provided the PDA ensures basic amenities.”
Other vendors showed the media the crumbling infrastructure, stressing the urgent need for action. “A host of issues continue to plague the market. Most of us paid for our stalls at the time of the inauguration. We only hope the PDA takes cognisance of our problems and implements concrete solutions,” remarked another vendor.
